Record quarter, record free cash flow, a guide $270M above the Street — and the stock is down 7% after hours before management has said a word. The memory-cycle barometer just told you what a beat-and-raise is worth in this tape when the stock has already halved its drawdown into the print.

Earnings reaction — beat, raise, sold. Fiscal Q1 revenue $4,233M (+61% y/y, +17% q/q) vs. $4.14B consensus and the $4.1B guide; non-GAAP GM 57.8% (+17.7 pts y/y); non-GAAP op margin 50.7%; non-GAAP EPS $7.68 vs. $7.40 (guide $7.30 ± $0.20). GAAP EPS $7.59. Operating cash flow $1.69B, free cash flow $1.48B — "highest ever." Retired $1.26B of debt in the quarter and another $750M after it (gross debt $3.6B → $1.6B), bought back $400M of stock, paid $168M in dividends, raised the dividend 3% to $0.76. FQ2 guide: revenue $4.8B ± $100M, non-GAAP EPS $9.20 ± $0.20 — consensus was $4.53B / $8.54, so the midpoint is 6% above on revenue and 8% above on EPS, and implies another +13% sequential quarter. Mosley's language: "multi-year growth phase," "long term customer demand visibility," "areal density gains while maintaining supply discipline," "value-based pricing."
Why −7% before the call: three things in the tables, and one in the tape. (1) Capex doubled to $211M from $105M a year ago and inventory rose $129M (+8% q/q) — in a stock that is a scarcity trade, any capacity add reads as the Toshiba headline (doubling AI HDD output) coming true from the inside, and "supply discipline" in the same release as 2× capex is the tension the bears will press on the call. (2) Sequential growth decelerates: +17% q/q this quarter, +13% guided — still extraordinary, but the slope rolled, and this tape has sold every rolled slope for a week (TXN, NXPI tonight). (3) Margin is near the ceiling: 57.8% GM and 50.7% op margin leave the next leg to volume and price, not leverage. (4) The stock rallied +3.7% into the print and was 11% off its October low already; 75% implied vol with 3.1% short interest means the move was pre-paid and there is no short to squeeze. Call is 5:00 PM ET — the after-hours print is a pre-call read, and this name has reversed AH moves on exabyte-pricing commentary before.
What the quarter said
| Line | FQ1 27 | FQ1 26 | Y/Y | Read |
| Revenue ($M) | 4,233 | 2,629 | +61% | vs $4.14B Street; +17% q/q from $3.63B |
| Non-GAAP gross margin | 57.8% | 40.1% | +17.7 pts | Price per exabyte and HAMR mix; the number the bears say is peak |
| Non-GAAP opex ($M) | 300 | 291 | +3% | Opex flat on revenue +61% — the whole beat is leverage |
| Non-GAAP op margin | 50.7% | 29.0% | +21.7 pts | Adjusted EBITDA $2.22B (LTM $6.09B) |
| Non-GAAP EPS | $7.68 | $2.61 | +194% | 232M diluted shares; 15.5% non-GAAP tax rate |
| Free cash flow ($M) | 1,479 | 427 | +246% | Capex $211M vs $105M; inventory +$129M q/q; receivables +$283M |
| Capital return ($M) | 568 | 182 | 3× | $400M buyback + $168M dividends; debt −$1.26B in-quarter, −$750M after |
The balance sheet is the under-appreciated line: gross debt from $3.6B to $1.6B inside four months, interest expense already down to $41M from $80M, and the 2028 exchangeable notes are the remaining instrument (10M potential shares, partly offset by capped calls). Shareholders' equity went from $2.2B to $3.5B in a single quarter. This is a company that was levered three years ago and is now, in effect, unlevered with $1.5B a quarter of free cash to deploy — which is why the $400M buyback is the opening bid, not the ceiling.
The one metric that matters
Price per exabyte, and how much of the allocated exabyte book carries it. Management's position is that the vast majority of nearline exabytes are allocated into calendar 2028 and that the 44TB Mozaic 4 HAMR ramp with the two largest cloud providers reaches 50% of HAMR exabytes by end-2026. If the long-term agreements carry price, 57.8% GM is a floor, not a peak, and the FQ2 guide is conservative. If they carry volume but not price — and Toshiba and WDC add nearline capacity through 2027 — then this quarter is the high-water mark on margin and the stock is a 10× FY28 earnings trade that the market is right to discount. Tonight's capex (2×) and inventory (+8%) lines are the first hard data the bears have had on the supply side in months; the call has to answer them.
Second-order: exabyte shipments and ASP (in the supplemental), the HAMR yield commentary on Mozaic 4, and whether the "supply discipline" line is reconciled with a capex plan for fiscal 2027.
Where it touches the threads
- Memory cycle / commoditization. STX is the HDD leg of the thread MU ($925, +2.4% today) and SNDK ($1,294) run on. A beat-and-raise sold −7% is the market saying scarcity pricing is now a known quantity and the next move is supply. WDC −2.6% AH in sympathy, SNDK −0.8%, MU −0.4% — the read-through is mild tonight, which says this is being treated as a Seagate capex story, not a cycle call. Yet.
- AI capex vs. backlog. "Long term customer demand visibility" into 2028 is the backlog evidence; 2× capex is the spending to meet it. Both sides of Carl's thread 1 in one release, the night before the hyperscaler cluster reports.
- Funding. Debt paid down from free cash, not equity — the opposite of the hyperscaler funding-strain pattern. If anything STX is a source of buybacks, not a user of capital markets.
Valuation and scenarios
At $620.85 after hours the stock is ~$141B of market cap (227M shares) and roughly the same EV; 16.9× pre-print FY27 consensus ($36.66) and 10.8× FY28 ($57.44). The FQ2 guide alone adds ~$0.66 to FY27 and the Q1 beat $0.28, so FY27 is drifting toward $38–40 before any Q3/Q4 revision. The multiple is the whole argument: 10–11× two-year-forward earnings is a cyclical-peak multiple; 16–17× is a growth multiple. The market is pricing the former on a company reporting the latter. Fair values are independent house estimates on FY28 earnings power and a cycle-appropriate multiple.
Bull30% probability
$950+53%
- Allocated exabytes carry price; GM holds ≥ 57% through FY27
- Mozaic 4/5 ramp on yield; capex stays ≤ 6% of revenue
- FY28 EPS ~$60 × 16× — a growth multiple on a cash-returning balance sheet
- Buyback scales toward $1B/qtr as debt is done
Base45% probability
$700+13%
- FQ2 delivered; GM plateaus 56–58%; growth decelerates into FY28
- Toshiba/WDC supply arrives 2027 but LTAs hold volume
- FY28 EPS ~$50 × 14× — cyclical-growth blend
- Stock ranges $600–800 until supply question resolves
Bear25% probability
$420−32%
- Price per exabyte rolls over in 2027 as capacity lands; GM back to low-50s
- Hyperscaler capex digestion; "allocated" exabytes get re-timed
- FY28 EPS ~$35 × 12× — a peak-cycle de-rate
- Retest of the September–October lows

The print moved the base case up and the probabilities not at all. The stock is being valued on the next cycle's trough, and the call has to prove the trough is far away.

What to watch on the 5:00 PM ET call
- Exabytes shipped and price per TB in the supplemental; the direction of ASP q/q.
- Capex plan for fiscal 2027 and how "supply discipline" is squared with $211M this quarter.
- LTA structure: how much of the 2028 allocation has price, not just volume.
- Mozaic 4 yield and the 50%-of-HAMR-exabytes milestone by December.
- Toshiba — any comment on competitor capacity, and WDC's Thursday read-through.
- Capital return: with debt at $1.6B, what the $1.5B/quarter of FCF does next.
- Inventory +$129M — build for the FQ2 ramp, or finished goods?
The desk read: this is the cleanest example yet of the week's rule — beats get sold when the slope decelerates, even when the slope is +13% sequential and the guide is 8% above the Street. The after-hours move is pre-call and the name is volatile on commentary; a convincing answer on exabyte pricing and capex could retrace half of it, and a vague one could take it to $600. Levels: $600 (October base) and $570 below; $668 (tonight's close) and $700 above.
