Consensus sits on the midpoint of a guide the company gave in July, the channel is holding two more weeks of inventory than a year ago, and the stock has sold the last beat. The print is about the Q4 guide and the gross-margin path to 60%, not the quarter.

Earnings reaction — Q3 printed, stock −8% after hours to ~$233. The quarter beat on every line and the Q4 guide landed exactly on the Street, and that was the problem. Revenue $3,786M (+19% y/y, +8% q/q) vs. $3.76B consensus and above the $3.75B guide midpoint; non-GAAP GM 58.6% (guide 58.0–59.0%); non-GAAP op margin 37.1% (guide 36.0–37.6%); non-GAAP EPS $4.20 vs. $4.12. Automotive $2,070M (+13% y/y, +7% q/q), Industrial & IoT $802M (+39%), Comm. Infra & Other $503M (+54%), Mobile $411M (−4% y/y, +17% q/q — the shortage dip reversed). Free cash flow $1,206M (31.9% of revenue), cash $3.94B, net leverage 1.3×, and the board added a $5B buyback authorization on top of $1.3B remaining (~8% of the market cap) — though Q3 capital return was only $359M, 30% of FCF.
Q4 guide: $3.75–3.95B (mid $3.85B, −1% to +4% q/q, +12–18% y/y), non-GAAP GM 58.5–59.5%, op margin 36.6–38.3%, EPS $4.14–4.58 (mid $4.36). Consensus was $3.86B / $4.35 — in line to the dollar. Channel inventory stayed at 11 weeks (9 a year ago). So the tape got what it asked for and sold it anyway: growth decelerates from +19% to +15% y/y at the midpoint, the sequential range includes a down quarter, the channel did not come in, and the capital-return ratio dropped. This is the "beats get sold when the slope decelerates" rule applied to an in-line guide, with TXN (−1.9% on a raise) and ON (−3.4% AH in sympathy) as the pattern. House view after the print: the numbers validate the base case — FY26 EPS now tracks ~$15.2 and the Q4 mid annualizes to $17.4 before 2027 growth — so we hold 375 / 290 / 185 (PW $285, now +22% from $233). What changes is the path: the stock has to re-rate on 2027 content ramps (S32, VW SDV win announced Oct 26) and the buyback actually being executed, not on quarters. Watch the 4:30 call for Q1 seasonality language, the channel plan into year-end, and whether the $5B comes with a pace. The setup (published pre-print, 1:40 PM CT)
NXP guided Q3 to $3.65–3.85B of revenue (+15–21% y/y), 58.0–59.0% non-GAAP gross margin, 36.0–37.6% operating margin and $3.89–4.32 non-GAAP EPS on 254M shares. The Street is parked on the midpoint: $3.76B and $4.12. Zacks' end-market split has Automotive at $2.06B (+12%), Industrial & IoT $804M (+39%), Communication Infrastructure & Other $491M (+50%) and Mobile $405M (−6%). Estimates barely moved into the print (+0.5% on EPS over 30 days).
The bar that matters is the one nobody has guided yet. Q4 consensus is $3.86B / $4.35, which asks for another +2.5% sequentially in a seasonally soft quarter and ~59% gross margin. Management said in July that visibility runs through Q4 and into Q1 2027, that backlog is growing and that customer escalations and late orders are both rising — language that supports the Q4 number if it holds, and that becomes the bear's exhibit A if it softens.
Tape context. Analog has been selling good numbers: Texas Instruments printed $6.05B (+28% y/y, a 2.5% beat) on Oct 21 and guided Q4 EPS above consensus, and the stock still closed −1.9%. NXPI itself fell ~7.7% after hours on the Q2 beat (from $267.67 to ~$247) because the 2030 framework did not come with near-term upside. Yet the group is bid today — STM +7%, ON +6%, MCHP +5%, ADI +3.5%, SOXX +3.7% — with NXPI +2.4% and flat over 30 days while semis as a group fell ~14%. The stock is 26% below its $339.95 high with only 3% short interest; the 58% implied vol and a $29 front-month straddle say the market is priced for a large move without a crowded short to fuel it.
What Q2 told us
| End market ($M) | Q2 26 | Q/Q | Y/Y | Read |
| Automotive | 1,938 | +9% | +12% | Content gains from software-defined architectures, not restocking (mgmt); S32N / S32K5 not yet in volume |
| Industrial & IoT | 755 | +20% | +38% | Fastest grower; ~half of I&IoT revenue now "AI-enabled" — the edge/physical-AI leg |
| Mobile | 351 | −10% | +6% | Component shortages cited; the one line that fell sequentially |
| Comm. Infra & Other | 452 | +19% | +41% | Data-center/infra; mgmt expects >$500M for 2026 |
| Total | 3,496 | +10% | +19% | Non-GAAP GM 58.0% (+150 bp y/y), op margin 35.1%, EPS $3.61 vs $3.50 est. |
Cash and the balance sheet were clean: $860M operating cash flow, $791M free cash flow (22.6% of revenue), $750M of 3.875% notes repaid at par, net leverage down to 1.5× from 1.8× a year earlier. Capital return was only $360M (45% of FCF, $256M dividends / $104M buybacks) against a framework that says "return all excess free cash flow" — the debt paydown absorbed the rest, so buyback pace is a question for the call.
The yellow flag is working capital. Distribution channel inventory is 11 weeks, flat with Q1 but up from 9 weeks a year ago; DIO is 156 days on $2.56B of net inventory. Management's framing is that the channel is being filled deliberately as demand recovers. The bear's framing is that a 19%-growth quarter still needed two extra weeks of channel to get there. Mobile already showed what a shortage-driven sequential decline looks like.
The one metric that matters
The Q4 revenue guide against $3.86B, with gross margin against 59%. Everything else on the slide is secondary. A guide at or above $3.85–3.95B with GM holding 58.5–59.0% confirms that the backlog language in July was real and that the 60% long-term GM target (57–63% range, raised from 55–58%) is on the 2027 path. A guide of $3.70–3.80B is "in line with seasonality" and will be treated as a deceleration by a tape that has been punishing exactly that. Anything flat-to-down sequentially, with channel weeks ticking to 12, reopens the late-cycle auto debate that has kept NXPI at a discount to TXN and ADI for a decade.
Second-order items: the channel weeks number itself (11 is the ceiling the Street tolerates), pricing (auto outlook assumes low-single-digit erosion — any change to that is a margin event), and whether Mobile recovered the shortage-driven Q2 drop.
Where it touches the threads
- Analog recovery vs. late cycle. TXN's +28% with a raised Q4 confirms the broad industrial restock; NXPI is the auto-weighted version of the same trade (55% of revenue). The macro backdrop for auto units is $103 WTI, a 5.00% 10-year and a Fed debating hikes, which is not an auto-demand tailwind — content per vehicle has to carry it.
- Edge / physical AI. I&IoT +38% is the growth engine and the part of the story the market has not paid for; management targets 20–30% CAGR in processing, connectivity, analog and security franchises. The question is whether that is a cycle or a franchise.
- China at 17% of revenue ($2.0B in 2025 by customer HQ) is both the auto-electrification growth pool and the tariff / local-competition exposure. No China-specific commentary came with Q2; watch for it.
- Capital intensity. The 2030 plan calls for ~2.3M 300mm-equivalent wafers (from ~1.5M in 2024) with internal front-end sourcing rising to 80%, plus ~$200M of equity-accounted JV losses over 2025–27. Capex was only $69M in Q2 — the step-up is still ahead, and it competes with the buyback.
Valuation and scenarios
At $251.79 the stock is 16.7× FY26E EPS ($15.11) and 13.8× FY27E ($18.30; Street revenue $15.97B, +12%). EV of ~$71B is ~4.4× FY27E sales. TXN trades near 8% off its high and ADI 5% off; NXPI at 26% off is carrying the auto/China discount. Our fair values are independent house estimates on FY27 earnings power and a cycle-appropriate multiple.
Bull25% probability
$375+49%
- Q4 guide ≥ $3.95B, GM ≥ 59%, channel held at 11 wks
- S32N/S32K5 reach volume in 2027; auto grows mid-teens on content
- I&IoT sustains 25%+, comm-infra > $600M run-rate
- FY27 EPS ≈ $20 × 19× (re-rate toward TXN/ADI)
Base50% probability
$290+15%
- Q4 guided $3.80–3.90B, GM 58.5–59%
- Auto +8–10%, I&IoT +20%, Mobile flat, pricing −LSD
- Buyback resumes toward the "all excess FCF" framework
- FY27 EPS ≈ $18 × 16× (mid-cycle analog multiple with the auto discount)
Bear25% probability
$185−27%
- Q4 guide flat-to-down ($3.60–3.70B); channel 12+ wks, digestion
- Auto units soften under $100+ oil / 5% rates; China share loss, tariff drag
- Pricing erosion steps up; JV losses and capex ramp eat FCF
- FY27 EPS ≈ $14 × 13× (trough multiple, near the 52-wk low)
Probability-weighted fair value
$285
Upside skew is a function of the discount already in the stock; the bear case needs the cycle to turn, not just a soft guide.

What to watch on the call (4:30 PM ET)
- Q4 revenue and GM guide vs. $3.86B / 59% — the whole reaction function.
- Channel weeks (11 → ?) and the words used for it: "deliberately filling" vs. "normalizing."
- Backlog / escalations / late orders — did the July language survive the quarter?
- Automotive by region, China specifically, and any tariff cost pass-through.
- Mobile: shortage resolved, or a second sequential decline.
- Buyback pace now that the $750M notes are gone; 10b5-1 was only $32M in the first month of Q3.
- 2027 capex and JV-loss cadence against the 2.3M-wafer 2030 plan.
The desk read: with the Street on the guide midpoint, the quarter itself is unlikely to be the surprise. The stock reaction is Q4 guide minus $3.86B, times a tape that has spent a week selling decelerating beats and a day bidding the analog group ahead of this print. Levels that matter on a gap: the post-Q2 after-hours low near $247 as the first support, $235 (Friday's close, before Monday's +4.6% and today's bid) below it; $268 (pre-Q2 close) is the first reference above.
